What happens when you take a stand—and no one stands with you?
Near the end of his life, the Apostle Paul found himself imprisoned, facing death, and abandoned by those who could have stood beside him. Yet his final words in 2 Timothy 4 are not filled with bitterness or defeat. Instead, Paul declares:
“Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me…” — 2 Timothy 4:17
In this message, we examine Paul’s final days and what his example teaches us about faithfulness when following Christ becomes difficult.
Paul reminds us that:
- We should be willing to stand with others. When people around us need help, encouragement, or the Gospel, we should be willing to accept the inconvenience and be there for them.
- We can forgive those who fail us. Although others abandoned Paul, he prayed that it would not be held against them.
- Bitterness does not have to define us. Paul’s response challenges us to release grudges that can hinder our relationship with Christ.
- The Lord remains faithful when others do not. Paul could say that when no man stood with him, the Lord did.
- Our trials can become opportunities for the Gospel. God strengthened Paul so that through him “the preaching might be fully known.” Even his trial became an opportunity to proclaim Christ.
Paul’s circumstances leave us with an important challenge: Don’t waste the hard moments. Instead of allowing hardship, disappointment, or abandonment to silence our witness, we can ask God to use those circumstances to point others to Jesus Christ.
At the end of his life, Paul’s confidence was not in himself or the people around him. His confidence remained in the Lord who had stood with him, strengthened him, and would preserve him unto His heavenly kingdom.
When others walk away, the Lord remains faithful.
